New changes to the Class 1 (Cat. C+E) driving test have been introduced from Monday 15th November 2021.
The changes will now allow you to go straight to a Class 1 (Category C+E) licence from a car licence (Category B).
Prior to this change you had to pass the test to drive a Class 2 (Cat. C) vehicle before being able to train and pass a test in a Class 1 (Cat. C+E) vehicle.
Once your C+E licence is acquired, you will be entitled to drive both Cat C (rigid) and Cat C+E (articulated) large goods vehicles.

To work as a Professional Driver you must complete Driver CPC and carry your Driver Qualification Card (DQC).
For first time holders of a DQC or for newly qualified drivers this is called INITIAL DRIVER CPC and is taken in two parts: Case Study Theory Test (Module 2) and Practical Demonstration Test (Module 4)
After passing both CPC tests you'll receive your Driver Qualification Card (DQC) to present to an employer ready for work as a vocational driver.
The test is made up of 7 case studies you work through on a computer. The case studies are short stories based on situations that you’re likely to come across in your working life.
You’ll be asked between 6 and 8 multiple-choice questions on each case study.
The test lasts for 1 hour and 15 minutes, and the pass mark is 40 out of 50.
When you pass you will receive a pass letter which is valid for 2 years.
You need to pass the Driver CPC part 4 practical demonstration test within 2 years, otherwise you’ll have to pass the part 2 case studies test again.
To prepare for this test we can set you up with some online training to give you and idea of the questions you will be asked.
Please Note: The questions you learn will not be the same questions you will get asked on the day off your test. The DVSA have not released the official questions for you to learn from as they want you to use your general knowledge but this online training will give you a good idea of what you will be asked.
You are not allowed to sit this Practical Demonstration test until you have passed Module 2.
To pass, you need to score 15 out of a possible 20 points in each of the five topic areas (75%) and achieve an overall score of 80%. In this ½ hour test you need to demonstrate your knowledge and ability in:
- Ability to load vehicle with due regard for safety rules & proper vehicle use
- Security of the vehicle and contents
- Ability to prevent criminality and trafficking in illegal immigrants
- Ability to assess emergency situations
- Ability to prevent physical risk
- Demonstrate your ability through a physical walk round vehicle safety check
